Our Story

Our congregation's roots are watered by the Brandywine River. Christ Church is one of four congregations that began in the Brandywine Manufacturers' Sunday School, supported by the leaders of industry early in the 19th century. The school combined basic education and Christian worship for the river's mill workers and their children. From these roots the Episcopal Church in Delaware grew a new congregation to serve those who lived near the river, whether tenants or landowners, many of whom were members of the du Pont family. As Wilmington's industry grew beside the river, so did Christ Church. The parish was often referred to as the church of the du Ponts or the DuPont Company church. Their practice of quiet generosity built the church and established its primary ministry in the holiness of worship, the education of children, and the care of those in need.

Now our members come from far and wide: Wilmington, North Wilmington, West Chester, Chadds Ford, Kennett Square, Hockessin, Newark, and closer to home in Greenville. They bring a richly diverse set of gifts and talents. Today Christ Church demonstrates our calling to come together to grow in our love for God, to love and serve our neighbors, and to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Our preschool, founded in 2006, carries one element from our early roots to a new generation, gathering children for education and sharing with them the Good News of God's love.

Like the rings that mark the growth of a tree and the new branches that spread shade ever more widely, the next generation of members in ministry will contribute to our stability and will spread the serenity of God's peace here beside the river and out into the larger world.
